Dr. David Brunner DVM, Practice Founder and Owner, Retired
I have had the honor and privilege of caring for pets since 1979. From immunizing and checking them over as a kitten or puppy to helping them take their last breath, I have cared for three generations of pets. Many current clients first came to my office when they were four or five years old. A favorite client took her first steps in my office many years ago. I treasure the trust I have earned from clients over the years.
The principles the hospital was founded on are the same principles guiding us today: Treat every pet as if it were our own. Treat their caregivers as we would like to be treated. Practice the highest quality medicine possible in a general practice.
I founded the Broad Ripple Animal Clinic in 1981 with one employee. Through word-of-mouth referrals, we have grown the practice of which I am very proud.
A bit about me: I was admitted to veterinary school after just two years of undergraduate study and received my DVM in 1979 from Purdue. BRAC was founded in 1981. I am passionate to a fault, about patient care and client service. I was board member of the Indianapolis Humane Society for 10 years and president for two. I have written two books, The Dog Owner’s Manual and The Cat Owner’s Manual, currently published in 12 countries. For 6 years, I was a nationally recognized speaker on the subject of customer service and staff development.
I enjoyed all aspects of practice, but mostly the relationship with clients and their pets.
Regrettably, in 2012 I was diagnosed with cancer. In 2013, 12 hours of surgery at UCLA saved my life. I spent the following two years struggling to recover. I am cancer-free as of this writing; the only residual being a sensory nerve deficit in my left hand. After 34 years, I chose to retire from clinical practice.
I continue to be involved in the office as chief visionary and staff cheer leader. My job is to ensure the founding principles are adhered to and visible every day within the practice.
I am married to the love of my life, Bonnie. We spend our time between Indianapolis and Naples, Florida. I can now be described as a crazy pet owner thanks to my German Shepherd, Hank, who goes everywhere with us.
